Hosted by the Soil Conservation Council of Canada and the Manitoba Soil Science Society, the Soils for our Future 2025 Conference took place in Winnipeg in July. It brought together over 700 researchers, industry members, leaders of farmer organizations, graduate students and other attendees. Ashlyn Whetter, a seasonal Environmental-Agricultural Technician with AgriEarth Consulting Ltd., presented as an undergraduate student an update on runoff water volumes and water quality at the research site. Highlights included: 1) surface runoff remains the dominant runoff pathway in the tile drained field, 2) increased tile flow rates going from upper-mid to lower-mid to lower slope positions, 3) higher total nitrogen (N) concentrations in tile flow compared with surface runoff, and 4) higher total and soluble phosphorus (P) concentrations in surface runoff compare to tile flow. Results on nutrient concentrations in runoff support the generally-accepted "trade-off" of lower P and higher N in tile drainage runoff when compared to surface runoff. Great job presenting, Ashlyn!
